Bile acid dependent and independent roles of fibroblast growth factor 15/19 in liver regeneration

Sandra M. W. van de Wiel, Stan F. J. van de Graaf

Abstract

The liver has a remarkable capacity to regenerate itself after extensive loss of tissue. This regenerative capacity makes it possible to surgically remove large parts of the liver when a tumor is present (1). Furthermore, liver regeneration also enables specials forms of liver transplantations, for instance living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), where a healthy person donates a portion of his liver to the transplanted patient.
