Valerio De Stefano is Full Professor of Hematology at the Catholic University School of Medicine and Director of the Department of Hematology of the Academic Hospital Agostino Gemelli in Rome, Italy. Additionally, he is Member of the Medical Committee of the Catholic University School of Medicine for distribution of Academic Funds for Research and Member of the Hospital Committee for the Optimal Blood Use.

Prof. De Stefano is an hematologist particularly interested in the field of hemostasis and vascular medicine. In the first part of his career his search was particularly focused on inherited thrombophilia; in the last decade he was involved in clinical topics concerning polycythemia vera and essential thrombocythemia, with particular emphasis on the management of thrombosis in such diseases. A special interest has been focused on the pathogenesis and the management of splanchnic venous thrombosis either in the general population and in the patients with myeloproliperative neoplasms. Moreover, he contributed to several clinical trials conducted in patients with multiple myeloma and immune primary thrombocytopenia. He acted as Principal Investigator in 6 research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research or by the Italian Agency of Medicines) and in many clinical trials investigator-initiated or funded by Drugs Companies.

He served as Member of the National Executive Committee of the Italian Society for the Study of Hemostasis and Thrombosis (SISET) (2000-02 and 2010-12), Member of the Board of the Chronic Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Working Group of the Italian Group for Hematologic Diseases of the Adult (GIMEMA) (2007-10 and 2016-present), Chairman of the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Working Group of the GIMEMA (2011-present), and Member of the Educational Activities Committee of the SISET (2015-present). He has been actively involved in the development of national guidelines formulation on women’s health issues such as prevention of venous thromboembolism due to pregnancy and oral contraception.

He is listed in the Top Italian Scientists (VIA Academy) and is author of about 500 scientific publications including 250 papers published in peer-reviewed journals scored with Impact Factor, 250 scientific communications at national and international congresses, seminars and training courses, and 26 invited main lectures in plenary session. He has served as a member of the Advisory or Editorial Board of peer-reviewed journals as Hematologica, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Blood Transfusion.
